What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I have learnt about the use of a camera, tripod, the apple mac, which within it i used i-movie and gaurage band

Mac:
Apple has decided to make the mac work in every way possible backwards to a normal computer, this ment it took me a while to get aclimatisded to the fuctioning of it. when i finnaly got the hang of it i started trying out the gaurage band software, which i really like and found relitivly easy to use creating one too many songs. this alound me to choose the song which fitted best. the other software we used was the I-movie software simple and easy to use but it dose require some skill to function effectivly. every shot had to be mearged togeather in such a way there was no jumps or sudden changes in light.
Camera:
the camera was the most vital piece of the recording gear it captured the sound and images. we learnt about shots and how to best acheive them. For example to get a good panning shot you use an elastic band on the handle of the tripod and pull slowly.
Youtube was very usefull in this production as it enabled me to store my production, preliminay and acess it from anywhere too look at it and influence the decisions made on the final production.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

When we were creating the prelimanary tast we were learning about very important rules. when filming for example; the 180 degree rule, (you never rotate the camera more than180 degrees). This stops the audience becoming confused, we also learnt about mise-en-scene and how each and everything in the shot needs to be taken into account. Which we found to our dismay more than once when filming our prelimanary task as you will see in the bloopers.

As filming progressed from the prlimanary to the actuall production my level of filming increased tenfold, i did a lot of the filming in both of the productions and with the first one the preliminary each shot took twice as long to get a resulting shot that was shaky. After learning how to film correctly using a tripod the filming became easier and more fulid meaning a panning shot was possible towards the end of the prelimanary. however this was imposible in the woods shooting for the production as the gound was soft from rain eairler that day and the tripod becam just excess bagage as it would’nt sit right. In the end we decided to just use spare timber as a makeshift stand, which actually worked better.
Also during the production of the prelimanary, the mac’s were put to great use, we experimented on them untill we had worked out how to use them compitently. this meant that in our final production they were exploited to help us as a group create the production.
there is software on the mac called gaurageband which enables you to create your own music. using gaurageband we created the background trak for the production somthing we could have never achieved on the preliminary.

The best place to show my dramatic improvement form preliminary to production would be the opening of the production where the camera ruches through the woods by increaseing the speed of the initiall part show a bit more of the location which helps to add the the suspence, but also was put there to show time has passed and events have already happened that are vital to the rest of the film

i have found when orgonising shot the peliminary was much easier as it had less than half the shots to go through and organise. so although i had pratise on organisation it was proably my weakest point and james helped me with this.
In the prelimanary organisation of costumes and props was poorly organised because of a missuderstanding the trousers of one of the actors was changed form black to blue which ment we had to alter the script and try to hide it with camera angles this didnt happen on the production because i took charge and explained in words then writing what need to be worn when and where.

How did you attract/address your audience?

our audience came to the movies to see a thriller, so we gave them one, following the most integral conventions (dark,damp and scary) and changing the less important ones (male villian female hero) to make the production uneique.
Once the movie has started it is important to keep them entertained and transfixed by the contents. In the begining we achieved this by speeding up the movie as if we were running in pov shot, this, hightens the suspence and tension. Due to the audience knowing that somthing WILL happen at the end of the fast pace. also by taking ideas from other famous movies like the writing dissapearing into the distance in starwars

using a similar method we can get the audience to feel as if they have known this film for longer but they havent it was a diffrent movie. This helps to create a sence of familirisation, just like the shops use to get us to buy products that we dont want.

when the audience come to watch the production they expect to come away at least feeling jumpy so in a attempt to scare or at least make the audience jump we matched up the backing track which both me and james created from scratch, to the film so they were in sync. Once this was done the atmosphere was hightened along with the tension, because the music suddenly peakes in volume and pitch to aid any fast moving action in makeing the audience jump this matches the classic thriller convention and was just to integral to the thriller genre to be replaced

although in the questionaire 30%of the audience look for comedy in a thriller we were unable to incorporate it into the thriller in a way which would have kept the thriller a thriller. so we tryed to satisfiy the other 70%who wanted shock factor and to be made jump. Both of which i feal we have achieved with the shock factor beiing achieveed far better than “jumpiness”.

the audience was mixxed about the opening they felt the speeding up of the initiall title scene was good, along with the negative effect. however they though the script was poor and unrealistic. most of the audience reated the opening between 4 and 7 rating the movie out of 10, 5.6 as an average which theysaid could have been increased by less wooden acting and a better script. having said that tey all thought the plott was very good and cold, with a bit more work be very good.

Who would be the audience for your product and how would you address your audience?

The audience for my product will be mainly teenagers with most of them being male around 18 to 21 with a smaller minority of 40+ males who have reached their midlife crises and are now regressing into their teenage years so we will count them as teenagers for now. I found this out by reviewing my audience with a questionnaire, the relevant results are bellow.


From my result you can clearly see the main audience is older male teenagers (and 41-50yr olds) this is why I chose to use actors of the same age category as it allows the audience to empathise with them.
They expect the thriller to be full of parts which shock and make them jump; also more surprisingly there need to be some elements of comedy in the thriller to make it good.

due to the age group and the genralisation that all male teenagers who watch thrillers and fantacy are spotty with massive glasses and ears that are shapped more like satellite’s than actuall ears! Then above is a perfect decription of my target audience.
This is mainly due to the interests of this age group being thrillers.
my audience profile man would still be studying at either collage or university.
the subjects he would be doing would be science based, probally physics
their personal life would not be very sucessfull which means they would go to the movies alone. chances are they would have a crush on the hottest most popular girl in school who would totally ignore any attempts to get closer.
because of this poor social life the movies would become a refuge for the depressed teen meaning he will continuly go and spend lots of his allounce on the movies.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

My media project will be sold by online companies like Itunes, exclusively this helps to cut down the cost of production, (e.g. creations of DVDs and cases), Recommended retail price, and, increase profits for all parties and still give millions of people the chance to view it. I understand the risk of reducing the viewing numbers; however it stands a greater chance of success online, because more and more people use smart software which makes movies portable, this means my target audience is constantly increasing and therefore my marginal profit will follow. Because the web is so large and the main smart software is apple I will approach Itunes for the main distribution company.

Although itunes is a huge company, it has a very large product list which allows the more obscure films and music to enter into a very competitive market in a fairly reasonable place.

Rogue pictures are the production company I have chosen to use Rogue pictures as my production company. This is due to its UK connections within the film industry, producing some of the great English films: “Hot Fuzz” and “Shaun Of The Dead”

In 1997, Rogue Pictures was formed as a division of PolyGram Pictures but the name was dropped in 2000 after Universal Pictures bought PolyGram. In 2004, the name was revived as part of Universal-owned Focus Features, with a goal of "high-quality suspense, action, thriller and urban features with mainstream appeal and franchise market potential. Because of its specific focus it matches my movie perfectly.
Rouge would, I believe enjoy this film production because it fits their interest genre and is compatible with their film list. this is mainly due to their alomst total dedication to the thriller convention and the attention to detail they would enjoy how our production would fit snugly into the classic thriller genre.
The films in their genre are high quality thrillers and comedies which fit my film, well maybe not the comedy bit but the rerst of their film list fits well. this is the only companny i have found with this blinkkered approch to the creation of films, which i believe will improve my film no end having a deadicated “thriller team” on hand.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The age rating for the film is 15+. This is mainly due to the violence within the film, althought there is no swearing in this piece of the film there would be in the bits which follow. My research found that a very large proportion of the thrillers on the market catter for 15 and above, this i believe is due to the fact it is very hard to make something gripping or scarry when it has to catter for children the only thing i can think of which has done that is Doctor who which has scared genorations of children.

I chose to target the teenage male market 15+ because it is shown they are the largest and most important group interested in thrillers and therefore continuation of the cinema thriller. I chose this group because of the group result from my questionnaire

this shows that my audience is predominatly going to teenage males and maybe some male 40 + yr olds going through midlife crisis, which all point to one aspect increasing the sale we need to use a female and we need to make them as sexy as posible which is why she is wearing leather. It has been proven that if your film has good looking attractive main charecters then your film will do better than if your charecters are ugly but your script is amazing.
The villain and hero were portrayed the way they were, because the use of a strong independent but angry female is appealing to the female audience, as it breaks away from the sterotypical weak female victim. Having a strong female as the hero, helps to increase the number of female audience members, we also chose this character because it disrupts the moral positioning of the audience. Making the audience more engaged and interested to find out whom is actually the villain and who is the hero. The male character, the villain is a priest usually portrayed as a kind gentle person this priest is a vicious and angry antagonist totally oppositeto what is expected of a preist and the female hero seems very unassuming concidering, this also helps to break out of the normal conventions, but i think it works .
The film isn’t meant to be set in this reality as such, it is a sort of mix between the real and the fantasy so the audience is able to empathise with the characters even know some of the plot isn’t necessary realistic. we did this in an attempt to stimulate the imagination of the audience.
I researched the genre thriller by watching and reviewing movies like Psycho.
And Memento, two very different films but both classed as thrillers. Admittedly Memento is a psychological thriller, but that very fact means it is in the same sub-catogory as some of the most successful thriller’s.

The production has some aspects which may offend some religious cults as it is basically based on the demise of an evil cult so the real cults out there may take offence to the view I have taken to describe them. The dress code for the film production for the girl hero is
casual urban ninja lots of blacks and leather combined with high healed boots. And for the priest a dark suit with a black shirt and priests white dog collar strip.

My media project is set in the thriller convention, which means it fits into the board thriller convention using excitement, suspense and tension as the main elements. The thriller genre intensifies the stimulation of the mind and imagination of the audience. I researched the convention by watching a multitude of thriller’s and breaking them down to find what main elements are, this, helped me to understand what is critical when choosing what to included, when creating a gripping thriller. My thriller uses role reversal of the hero in the story being a woman and the villain being a man.
However it sticks to the convention of being the hero who wins. The film is a non-liner starting at the end with a big fight to the death, or so the heroine thought which allows the film have a sequel film produced.
Each film I looked at the had simmerlaritys in its mise-en-scene all of which are very visually unique to thrillers. Most of which are dark and look damp, cold and either set in woods or old structurally lacking buildings. this all adds atmosphere to the scene even without any acting, combine this with background music which spikes in volume and pitch suddenly and your half way to creating a great thriller, Because we were unable to find a building fitting the description we decided to go for the next best. So we chose to film around a woody area, i scouted an area of 25 miles we narrowed the potential shot sites to just three:

(the trees were thin and there was very little diversity), and was far too noisy for the site to work on digetic sound as it was close to the a17 this was a real problem as it left us with only one set :

the woods itself was perfect although there were still problems with this place because of the car park being too open there was no chance of getting the shotts needed so the script was edited to fit our set. there were problems with lighting i wanted a much darkker set but the weather was far too variable once the light started going it went too fast to make the shotts have the same lighting so we filmed during the day as there was less variation in light.

the charecters are dressed almost all in black which give the effect of darkness and evil. This is done to both charrecters because it allows the audience to missplace their support. helping keep the audience on their feat, and intrested.

the effect i used were a mix of conventional and non-conventional; the speeding up at the start to the film is used in manny films to do pov shots of a demonic beast or alien just about to attack its pray... in my case however i used it to get to the fight scene which emphasises it as if this was very important and it is to the whole illusion of the protagonist actually being the antagonist and visa versa. The non-convetional effect i used was a negative type effect, which was used in the starting point of the film, to reduce the visability of the background, and focus on the forground, which holds the text ( this helps set the scene for the audience quickly just like in the star wars cronicals), telling the story .

She drags James out of the boot of the car, through the garden and into the woods behind the house.
She throws him to the floor and he looks at her
“Why have you brought me here you heretic?” James asks
“This is the most secure place I can think off at the moment” Leah replies, putting her backpack to the floor and taking off her leather jacket.
“Why secure?” James asks trying to get up but Leah kicks him in the stomach causing him to double over in pain.
“This is why” Replies Leah drawing her gun from her pocket “For all the things you have done and all of the crazy shit you pulled back there” Leah pointed it at his head.
“Hah I’ve already lost everything a faithless heretic like you killing me would be the final insult” Scoffed James, looking to the floor before Leah moves closer to him but James looks up again
